Employee Spotlight: Kate Magoon, Driving Collaboration and Innovation

At Zentra, our success is powered by the expertise and dedication of our talented team members. This month, we’re thrilled to spotlight Kate Magoon, Lead Software Engineer, whose passion for collaboration, problem-solving, and innovation is helping shape Zentra’s mobile solutions for the multifamily industry.

From Biology to Software Engineering Leadership

Kate’s career journey began with a foundation in biology, where she held various research roles. Her path took a significant turn when she transitioned into engineering, earning an electrical engineering degree. Initially interested in hardware and firmware, it was an internship in mobile app development at Allegion that ignited her passion for software engineering.

“I saw the potential for growth and innovation in software, especially at Allegion, where the focus was shifting toward digital solutions,” Kate explained.

Over the past decade, she has advanced from intern to lead engineer, playing a crucial role in driving the evolution of Zentra’s mobile solutions.

A Day in the Life: Leading with Collaboration

As Lead Software Engineer, Kate balances hands-on development with leadership responsibilities. Her day typically involves:

  • Team Collaboration: Working on mobile stand-ups, resolving blockers, and ensuring smooth workflows across U.S. and Bangalore teams.
  • Technical Strategy: Addressing tech debt, driving app performance improvements, and exploring new technologies.
  • Code Development: Contributing to development stories and reviewing merge requests to maintain high code quality.
  • Cross-Team Communication: Collaborating with UX, systems engineering, and platform teams to ensure seamless functionality.

Kate’s ability to work across time zones and lead collaborative efforts has been instrumental in Zentra’s success.

“I love working with such smart, driven people. It’s inspiring to see how much everyone cares about creating great products,” she said.

Proud Accomplishment: Zentra Acceleration Push

One of Kate’s standout achievements was leading Zentra’s acceleration initiative in early 2024. Tasked with onboarding new mobile engineers and QA testers from Bangalore, Kate traveled to India to ensure a smooth transition.

“It was challenging but rewarding. We groomed stories, set up workflows, and onboarded engineers to hit the ground running. What started as a temporary initiative turned into a full-time collaboration between U.S. and Bangalore teams,” Kate explained.

Her leadership during this pivotal moment helped expand Zentra’s capabilities and fostered a culture of cross-border collaboration.

Life Outside of Work

Outside of work, Kate enjoys gardening and is passionate about creating a bug-friendly yard filled with flowers and plants. She’s also a proud pet parent to her cat, Lolo, and two dogs, Monty and Mimi.

Kate’s journey and contributions embody the spirit of teamwork and forward-thinking that drive Zentra forward. Her dedication to solving complex problems and fostering collaboration inspires us all as we continue to deliver intuitive solutions for the multifamily industry.
